This course is designed to comply with HSE recommendations and enable the successful candidate to train and assess both adult and paediatric First Aid courses.
The competency required to become a professional First Aid Trainer/Assessor is clearly defined by the HSE:
Trainers/assessors should have knowledge and competence in first aid, as demonstrated by: Holding a current, valid FAW certificate (or being exempt – namely registered Dr. Nurse or Paramedic), and having knowledge and competence in training and/or assessing, demonstrated by holding a training/assessing qualification. Since October 2015 you have been required to also hold a formal, generic Teaching and Assessing qualification. The most common option to meet this requirement is the Level 3 Award in Education & Teaching (L3 EAT) with the unit “Principles and Practice of Assessment”. Other qualifications are accepted; please see the latest guidance for a matrix of other acceptable qualifications.

How long is the course and where is it held?
The First Aid focused 5 day course is held at our Warminster, Wiltshire training venue BA12 8BT . Learners are also required to completion of a series of written assignments towards the achievement of the level 3 Award in Education and Training. These assignments are completed via self-directed study on our online education platform.
What does the course cover?
Contents of the 5-day First Aid Instructors course
Understand the role of the first-aider
Use available equipment
Assess the situation and act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious
Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking, wounded and bleeding or suffering from shock
Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries
Administer first aid to a casualty with:
Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries
Chest injuries
Burns and scalds
Eye injuries
Sudden poisoning
Anaphylactic shock
Recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid for:
Heart attack
Stroke
Epilepsy
Asthma
Diabetes
Meningitis
Sickle cell anaemia
Safely and effectively operate an AED
The Level 3 Award in Education & Training covers:
The roles and responsibilities of a teacher in education
Relationships between different professionals in education and training
Inclusive teaching and learning approaches to meet the needs of learners
Creating a safe and supportive learning environment that engages and motivates their learners
Planning, delivery and evaluation of inclusive teaching and learning
Reflecting on their own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills
Identify different types and methods of assessment
Assessment & Certification
The competency is achieved through attendance of a classroom based First Aid Focused week at our training centre plus completion of a series of written assignments towards the achievement of the level 3 Award in Education and Training. Assignments are completed and submitted via our online platform (Moodle). Once you have submitted these assignments and had them signed off our team will contact you to arrange your virtual teaching observation. This 30 minute session will be observed via Teams or Zoom and must be conducted in live time ( not recorded).
Certification for the Level 3 Award in Education & Training is awarded by Highfield Qualifications.
